Well the first ride of my holiday and the last ride of the year for me. I set myself 2 hours and headed off around the road and up the grunty road climb on the Sandy Bay- Riwaka Rd. It was hot and humid and the climb is rather arduous. Finally got to the top and turnt left up the forest Rd. A short grunt up and then coasted around to the small climb to the top of Upper Cork Screw. Fast blast with a couple of jumps down here, into top of Corkscrew before my first run down the new track...Jaws. A real fun track traversing the side of the hill. Jumps, twists, turns and lots of fun. This will be a cool track when it is finally finished. Hooked into Velocity which is a fast little downhill before hanging a right into Skullduggery. Twisty travere track which is quite narrow and hugs the side of the hill. Nice steady run to the end...or what I thought was the end. They have continued the track on somewhat which is great. Nice flowing round and down until I joined up with scoot. A track that connects things together. Up Scoot I went until it shot me out at the top of Remedy. This is a downhill track that twists, turns and drops through the forest. Good at pace with a few tricky little turns etc. This drops me onto Shady lady which is just a hooty blast before coming out onto Revelation which is a casual ride to the start of my climb. I realised I was way behind schedule with lots of climbing to do so started up Ziggy, grunting and sweating finally reaching the start to Corkscrew. This drops you down again until a creeek crossing and then it is up up up. Good grunt and cleaned the really steep gnarly hairpins at the top. Up the forest road and for the first time ever I did the run down the tarmac. Fast pace back to camp where the wife was starting to wonder where I was. Pleasant final ride.

Tuesday 23rd December
The Cook arrived at the bottom of Worsleys then Bugs arrived
followed by Dozer. No one else showed so the 3 in Blue hoped in the van and
slowly drove to the end of the tarsel. On the bikes in the heat and up we went.
Followed two 4WD attempting to drive up Worsleys. After we got past them we
headed into the pines and up the steep farm track to the rocky look out. Regroup
there then continued up the single track to the top. Headed back down the same
way at the top then into fight club and various other unknown tracks until we
got to the farm track at the bottom. All having a great ride. Up we went to
where we started then headed back up though the pines for a 2nd loop. Watched
one guy in a group hit a berm on the side of the track then off he went into the
long grass. Nothing hurt, just embarrassed. Continued up to the rocky look out
then headed down the old Bee line with Dozer leading followed by Bugs then The
Cook. After Dozer taking the wrong track, Bugs got the lead. Flying trip down
sliding though the rocky, rooty steep sections before the track at the bottom.
Bugs and Dozer waiting for the The Cook at the bottom but no sign of him. After
some discussion Dozer headed up the 4wd track to the top and Bugs back tracked
up the single track. Found the Cook who had got a blow out in the front tyre and
then crashed into the biggest pine tree on the hill. Broken glasses and a nasty
cut the the eye brow, blood tripping from his nose, a bleeding finger, bleeding
knee but in good spirits. Bugs helped him repair his tyre while he sorted
himself out. Dozer arrived on his 3rd run down the lower section. All sorted
then we headed down the rest of the single track to the 4wd track at the bottom.
Back up to Worsleys then headed down the last section before the road. Bugs took
the high left over grown track next to the gate with Dozer following. Bugs
cleared the last big hole before the track meets the tarsel. Dozer didn't. His
front wheel caught the berm and thew him over the bars landing on the tarsel.
Graze to the knee and a corked thigh. After collecting himself off the road we
coasted down to the van. The Cook headed home from here while Bugs and Dozer
rode down the road until the new track on the left though the gate. Bugs lead
down here with Dozer close behind. Slipping n sliding though here which was a
lot of fun until we arrived at the tarsel again. Down the road to the cars and
off home. Great ride for Bugs but a few bruisers for the others.

Sunday 21st December
Phatboy and Tinkerbell arrived at mine and the 3 of us set off towards Gruntsbury. Me feeling a bit like throwing up off and on the whole ride but onwards we went. Arrived at the top to find Sandals waiting for us. We all then headed around Vernon Track and down to the top of Rapaki. Quick regroup and then over Witch Hill and up to the top of Castle Rock. Had a really good blast down here before regrouping and making our way up to the Gondola. A big posse in front but Phatboy and Tinks got amongst these guys on the climb. Regrouped in the shade at the top finding Bugs waiting. He had started at Broadleaf Lane. After nearly pulling out from feeling ill I stayed with the group and we headed down to the saddle and then climbed up to Mt Pleasant summit. I tailended as I recovered. At the top the others followed the main trail while I took the short cut that misses the first loop. This got me to the fence and into the trail ahead of the others. I had a good blast through the rocks swooping down the trail with Phatboy, and Bugs not far behind. Regrouped and headed down Greenwood. I had an average ride down here compared to my recent runs but still enjoyed. We all regrouped before heading down Ct Thomas. Everyone having a great run until the stupid gate. I held it open until Sandals got there so the others got a bit in front. I was blasting it down here clearing the first 2 majors and then seeing Tinks and Bugs stop on the 3rd. This was due to Phatboy having a major off. He had landed heavily on his hip on the down side of the track and gashed both knees. One pretty badly. We patched him up, with our first aid kits. He walked a little then sat on the bike and rolled down with us following behind. he could not pedal. At the top of the hairpins he let us past so we could go for it so we did. We regrouped at the final fence, helped Phatboy over then when we got to the road we pushed him when needed, he rolled the downhill and then I pushed him to Dot Com. While on the hill we had rung Debs who had driven out to collect him. They left for A and E while the rest of us had drinks and food before grunting it home. Overall a good ride, would of been better if I had been feeling better and Phatboy had stayed on the bike.

Saturday 20th December
Bugs and Dozer headed off for an adventure. Drove to Hamner via
the long way, though the Westcoast. The weather was hot n dry in Hamner. Parked
at the Dog Stream on Jollies pass road. Rode over to Jacks Pass then headed up
to Tank Track. This as many tracks have changed since we rode them 3 years back.
Headed down this then up into Yankee Zepher Trail. Great flowing track down
here. Into Swoop trail from here then up to the start of Red rock. Great blast
down here where we headed up Dog Stream trail. Chatted to a couple there then
headed up to Big Foot. This had some challenging steep switch backs to head up.
Down we headed enjoying it all. Up to Detox. Flew down this missing the Chicken
root and both riding the drop off. Worked our way back towards the car. 19.3km
with 521m of climbing.

On this day, Nelsie and Mellonfarmer did the Rameka. They rode in Canaan Rd from the main Takaka Hill road, and jumped on the Roller Coaster part of the Canaan Loop and rolled into Harwoods Hole carpark, then headed down the Rameka. An excellent, albeit very slippery ride, having had a bunch of rain on it the night before. The marble stuff was all really slippery, as were all the roots, and some of the mud... Heaps of windthrow having thrashed the forest just outside the National Park bit. The Packtrack leading to Rameka Project was awesome, tho it's incredible Nelsie never killed himself the rate of knots he hit some of the marble sections that had him pinging about like a pingy thing. Rameka Project was sweet, tho a bit slippery in the forest. Then the Klicks... One Klick, yep, good. 2 Klicks? stupid muppet Mellonfarmer hit the wooden jump and bollocksed his landing, managing to bend his seat with his ribcage, and grazing and massively bruising his inner thigh on his rear tire. Broken rib and still sore at 2 weeks later. Straight back on tho, and they pumped it good all the way down to Pohara. Rib didnt even really start hurting til about 3 hours after it happened...

Sunday 14th December
Phatboy, Tinkerbell and Silverfox rode over to my place and then the four of us headed around the river via Hansens Park and then on towards Huntsbury. Just before heading up Ramahana Rd we had Dozer waiting. Up the hill with a breif pause on Aotea Cres before continuing. I got a call as we heading up the hill while the others continued. Chased them but did not catch them until the regroup at the top of the tarmac. Chugged on from here until the summit where we were met by Sandals and SeeDee (Chris). As we were going to start the trek over Vernon Phatboy hears air escaping from his front tyre. This stops with a quick pump so I led over Vernon. Lots of people coming from Rapaki so it was not a really fluent run but still ok. Then we headed over Witch Hill which was more fun. Regrouped at the end before Sandals led off towards Castle Rock. I caught her and the others joined in at their leisure. Castle Rock and I had a bit of a lead so I headed straight into the downhill. Loved it and flowed pretty well. Cleaned the lot and we regrouped at the top of the Bridal Path. Phatboy and Tinkerbell coming in not long after me. Silverfox had got a puncture so we waited for him and chatted with Mad Dave. In fact we listened to Mad Dave for way to long. We then headed back the way we came. Sandals led off but dabbed in the first rocks so we all past her. Good run up here with only 2 dabs for me. One on each of the hairpins. Cleaned the rest including the stinky bit near the top. Regrouped and headed down towards Witch Hill. As we started theis Phatboy got another puncture so had to stop and reinflate. We decided to regroup at Rapaki as more to look at. It was crowded at the top. Up and over Vernon with a quick regroup at the start of the Traverse. Due to time constraints we decided to come down Old Skool. I led off around Traverse and then down towards Old Skool. Did not get the line and went off piste, what a wild ride. Phatboy flatted yet again and after waiting for a seal discovered more than one hole leaking air and fluid. Time to put in a tube. Down the hill staying on the zigs and zags. Good run down here and thewn at the first fence we let Phatboy take the lead. Dozer, Tinkerbell, me then Silverfox followed in a tight group for a fantastic run down. Regrouped and then slowly the group split with first Dozer pulling out then at the end of Bowenvale another 4 left leaving just Phatboy and me. Then Phatboy split and I did the last run home by myself. Great mornings ride.

Tuesday 9th December
We had two teams tonight, the blue team which consisted of Bug's,
The Cook and Dozer. The Mufti team consisted of Sandals and The Silver Fox. We
meet on the flat at the bottom of Worsley's where we piled into 2 cars and drove
to the end of the tarsal. We headed into the singles track with The Cook leading
followed by the rest. We decided to head up the 4wd track though the pines,
Dozer took the lead followed by Bug's, The Fox, The Cook then Sandals. At the
rocky look out we kept heading up the single track as far as we could. We then
dropped down to the Worsleys track and headed up the Body Bag. We all had some
issues towards the top, some more than others but go there in the end. Up to the
top of The Nun. Bug's lead followed by Dozer, The Fox, The Cook and Sandals. We
all had a ripper run except for The Fox who didn't show at the half way point.
Turns out he had a flat tire. Dozer and Bugs decided to continue down the lower
half of the Nun while we waited. Back up the road they came and still no Fox.
Quick call to him and it turns out he got a 2nd flat tyre and run out of tubes.
He decided to walk back up while the rest rode the road back up to the top of
Worley's. Bugs headed up to the Nun with a spare tube. Back as a group at the
top of the Body Bag. Dozer lead down with the rest following in his dust. He
past a few female walkers and then ran into some ruts and ended up where he
shouldn't had been. Back into the forest and it was decided to go the old way
down. Everyone was in close order until the rocky lookout. The Fox put some air
in the bottom of his tyre while Dozer, The Cook and Sandals headed down. Bug's
and The Fox then gave chase to catch up. Catching the others half way down where
they had waited. Down we continued with Bug's now leading followed by Dozer, The
Cook, The Fox and Sandals. Big smiles from all at the bottom as we all had one
of our best runs down here. Back up the 4wd then turned right and headed down
the last of the pines to the carpark. No stopping here as we rode down the road
to the new track on the left before the steep road section. Dozer lead into the
single track with Bugs hot on his heals and the rest not far behind. More big
smiles at the end of here with Sandals wondering how her side knobbles had held
her on the side of the hill. Great little track here. Down the road to the cars
at the bottom. Quick ferry of drivers back up the hill then home we went. Home
around 9pm. 14km with 405m of climbing. Drinks next Tuesday for Christmas.
Meanwhile, the rest of the usual were at a TFC meeting, and MacGyver and his mate The Sharratt were partaking of the Packhorse track, a there and back with MacGyver nearly puking trying to keep up with Sharratt...

An out of order ride on Saturday 6th December
Rubberjaws (me) had arranged to take out a couple of newbie riders today. He arranged for the Cook to come out also. The Cook arrived followed by the newbies. Kevin has done Rapaki once and the Crocidile a couple of times but not recently while Roy has never been up a hill. We set off a t a very relaxed pace with The Cook getting ahead. Roy thought we were half way up when we left the tarmac but we soon put him straight. Kevin was doing ok. I stuck with them while the Cook headed on ahead to wait at the flat stretch. It was funny watching Roy struggle his way up. Every rider who passed him gave encouragement which was really cool to see. Eventually hooked up with the Cook. As we entered the last stretch up I gave it a boost. Easy to do when the rest of the ride up was a doddle. Caught the Cook who was ahead and blasted to the summit. Slowing 100 meters from the top to allow the Cook to catch up. We then waited for the others to show up. Kevin first and then finally Roy. Looking pale but pleased to be at the top. He said "Now for the down" and looked at bit sad when we sad at the end of the little climb. Kevin and Roy took the road to the Traverse Track start. I led the Cook over Vernon giving it a real thumping, stretched out a lead and got around in very quick time. The regroup took some time as we waited for the newbies. Into the Traverse going well. Kevin had led off started well but I passed him in the rocky section as did The Cook. Around and then waited at the top just before the good run down to the pond. 3 of us waited a while and saw a guy go over the bars a long way back. Hoped it was not Roy because he did not move for a while. I ended up going back to see if it was Roy but found him 200m back fixing his chain problem. He had a small tumble and bent his derailer. Fixed that and continued on. Good blast around to Vic Park. Both the newbies enjoying themselves. We then headed down the Rock Garden, They walked the rocks but Kevin then rode the rest, while Roy did Ok. Down Shazzas into Brents. We watched some guys go over at the bottom and then Roy lept over the bars at the same spot as he lost control.
Down Bridges, and Flow. They both were happy at the bottom. We then headed home in a relaxed style. Slowest ride I have ever done in this track time wise but I dug it in whenever possible.

Sunday 7th December
Mellonfarmer met Tinks and Dozer at the Ferrymead bridge just after 9am, no other takers, while sandals toiled her way ahead somewhere up the hill. Up St Andrew's, Marama into Cannon Hill
Cres then through the park and on up Major Hornbrook to the top where the boys found the girl resting. About 10 it was by then, and 10.05 when they cruised on up
through Britten, Sandals heading into Greenwood the old way, while the boys continued on
around Britten, then as per Tuesday, back along the Summit Rd and up
Broadleaf. Good times from the top, being reasonably fresh in memory for Tinks and MF
from Tuesday, both certainly rode it smoother, not screwing up any of the
tussocky corners. As they rolled down through the
ruins it was half an hour then since they'd started out from the
bottom of Britten. Awesome run down Greenwood chasing the idea of Sandals ahead, with Tinks never too far off MF's tail. MF lost his chain in the upper rocky bits, but a quick reinstall and Tinks holding
back left him with a continued lead. Excellent blast down the rest of
it into Gloomy Gulch and below. Then just above Dangerous Dave's sections there
were a couple of guys waiting, and they jumped in after Tinks and MF rolled through, ahead of Dozer. Good fang all the rest of the way
down, with a bit of a dab through wrong gearing the first rocky up
followed by a nice roll down the rest, to find Sandals reclining once again.
Next, it was into Captain Thomas, with Dozer doing what he does best, dozering a runner chick who was paying more attention to
her phone than the trail at hand, and this after Tinks and the Mellonfamer had been past her. Somebody's cleaned up some sections lower down,
including around the first of the rock challenges, but the PFMTBC-ers met a big
clusterfuck of other riders here and so had to walk down it anyway. Thankfully, the
two rocky challenges further down are still intact, and the first two
cleaned them both no prob, but Dozer walked down the second one (i
think). Final blast not bad, except for the silly bits near the very
bottom. and it was 11am as the 3 rolled down through the park and roads to Dot Com
where they assembled, getting a coffee ready for Sandals, who wasn't at all far behind. MF took off a little earlier than the rest and met some serious wind as he rounded
into Moncks Bay as well as on the causeway it was coming
at him from the left front quarter, making for a wearisome crossing.
He was home well before 12.

Toosday 2nd December
The Stove was first on the scene, followed by Mellonpharmer (who'd lost his helmet) and MacGyver, then Buggs and then Tinks, at the top of Upper Major Hornbrook. Rubberjaws, who'd organised it was unable to attend. Mellonpharmer wore MacGyver's spare townie lid and The Emperor's New Gloves, made from only the finest of rarified airs. Off up Britten they trundled, two out front widening the gap on the other three. Then it was around to the end of the original traverse trail and then back along the road and straight up Broadleaf all the way. Into the descent, down the rocks to the stile and over. In the second corner below this MF dropped his chain, allowing the others all to pass and then he was in for the chase. Overtook The Stove just after the rocky sections, then chased through the swoopy tussocks and wound in Buggs by the end, both of them nearly running over a small black dog not being restrained by its owners. MacGyver led into the Greenwood mainframe with MoFo right on his tail. Good run down, with the rocks rocky and the dirt grippy. MF's chain stayed on all the way til the wee valley before the final blast, and so once again he was behind Warren who kindly waited for him on the rocky up, and beat him to the bottom much to his satisfaction. At the bottom some discussion was had and the team split into two groups for a race... with MacGyver and The Farmer of Mellons accepting the challenge of seeing whether Greenwood was faster than the road? However, McG and MF stopped pretty much immediately after setting off, thereby voiding the competition, to check out the view over towards the road below the second-to-last corner on the way down and then chatted to some stranger who stopped to chat. The climb was honest, with only a couple of real pinches, which both nearly cleaned. They stopped a couple of times to let riders through, including one enormous group that just kept appearing over the brow of the hill, 10, 15??! Some of the tail enders were really struggling on the rocks, including the last one who was carrying his bike. Finally out the top, up the road and into a rapid descent of Britten back to the car, the others having won the race up the hill.

Sunday 30th November
Wow the months have flown by. Today I set off from mine all by myself. I headed around down the motorway, then onto Radley and then on the back streets to the Heathcote Cut and met up with Bugs at the end of Allport. We headed around the tow-path to Ferrymead and then out to Sumner via the courseway taking note of all the safety stuff put out for the run that was going to happen shortly after we went through. Got a call from Dozer who had parked at Ferrymead Bridge after we went through. He rode from there. We arrived at Dot Com and we were followed by Tinkerbell and Silverfox (in the van) Dozer (on the bike) and Sandals and Helmut (in the car). Organised ourselves and headed down the road to Sumnervale where we started our climb up Ct Thomas. Nice steady pace up here cleaning all the hairpins on the way. No rush but very enjoyable pace. Regrouped at the top of the zigzags then carried on up, of course we had to lift over the rock sections but cleaned everything else. At the top the road was being sealed and we headed over to do Godley Track. Another posse was about to start so we all got mixed up until our usual regroup spot after the 2nd technical. Some cleaned these but most did not. Off we went catching and passing the slowest of the posse in front. Fast blast down the first long run, quick regroup then off we went. Sandals mentioned she would go slow and head straight down Anaconda when she got there. (it turns out she was a tad hungunder) We blasted up and over, down over PFMTBC rock and then we took off on the upper side of the road onto the sheep track around to Godley. Helmuts first time around here. Blasted down to the road and then I led off around towards the Snake. Good blast and a few holes to keep you on your toes. I was feeling great and felt like I had a great flow on. Just before we headed down the snake a couple who had ridden the road set off just ahead of us. I led off after them determined to pass them quickly. At the first little bridge I pulled a swift right into the little bypass and got in front of the girl. The guy was going faster but he was not going to let anyone pass so I stayed hard on his tail. Rolling hard we got to the hairpin by the cattlestop where half of china was walking down the hill. He slowed and I shot down a little track screaming at the walkers to move. They lept out of the way and I shot through, not slowing down until the Taylors carpark. I was enjoying myself going as hard as I could. I had no idea about the others but knew someone was chasing me. What a buzzy ride down. We regrouped and laughed about the ride down all feeling good (except the guy that I passed) and started the grind up and over the hill. half way up the woman flew past on her bike then the guy. Made them feel good passing us on the up but who cares about that. Most people pass me going up :). Down the road at a fast pace and then to Dot Com for tea and food. (lunch for me). Then Bugs, Dozer and I set off for home. The van passed us, we dropped Dozer at Ferrymead and then Bugs at the Bridge with me doing the last stretch on my own. Home by 12.40. Fantastic ride for the last day of spring. See the maymyride below for my ride.

Tuesday 25th November
After collecting the Cook we headed around and up Worsley Rd to hook up with the rest of the Posse.
They were Bugs, Dozer, Tinkerbell, Silverfox and MacGyver. Had a text from Helmut and Sandals to say they were casually heading up in front. Up we went into the 4wd track spread out until we got to the corner where you can head up one of two ways. We met Sandals and Helmut here. Rather than stay on the 4wd rutfest we headed up the guts. Grunt grunt grunt up to the top flat section by the cliff. Had a quick breather before heading down fight club. Ages since I have ridden in here but had a blast. Up the sidle track and then up the guts again. Some tried alternate routes but no success in finding a good uphill track. Maybe we need to look at this ourselves. Regrouped at the cliffs and then headed on up to the very top. Nice climb through here and never been up this way before. We then headed down a route behind Macgyver who was leading the way. I believe the track is Alices Restaurant. Wonderful track, got really dark in the trees, steep and off camber but fantastic. A couple of regroups on some steep gnarly spots but we all enjoyed this track alot. We then headed down to the cars. Macgyver showed some of the lads the downhill route from here while others headed home. Then we all went home feeling happy..

Sunday 23rd November
Dozer, Tinkerbell and Bugs met at mone and the 4 of us headed around the road and then did the grind up Rapaki. So many people on the track, walkers, runners, dogs, and riders. It was quite crowded and annoying at times. Finally reached the top in good time with a wee rest before I led off over Vernon. Good run up here reaching the start to the Traverse in pretty quick time. led off around towards Vic park only stopping because some pillock coming the other way got into a panic and stopped in the middle of the track then onwards again. Down Thompsons with Tinkerbell leading me at the rear and then headed up the road to Marleys. The up slowing me down somewhat. Down the Nun with a few dodgy bits. getting quite rocky and bouncy on spots but we all survived before heading back up to the top of Vic. Down the track into the Gums, then Shazzas, Brents, Flow, Bridges etc. A good wee run. WEe then headed up Hidden Valley and onto Old Skool for a nice blast down here. From the track end we headed to Dozers for tea, coffee and Bannana Bread before heading home by 12.45. Stiff easterly for Bugs and I to ride into.

Tuesday 18th November
A rather pleasant night for a ride if you take away the wind that was building up. After collecting the Cook we met up with the rest of the posse at the top end of Bowenvale Ave. A good group that included Silverfox, Tinkerbell, Bugs, Phatboy, Helmut and for a change we also had MacGyver with us. After chatting about Phatboys problem with his carbon wheel we rode up the shingle road. This has a couple of steep grunts in it and you also have to be careful of riders coming down. We reached the crossing of the creek in a flash really. Some gasping of air and we all set about attempting to cross and ride the first stretch. Not a lot of success and it was made worse by the fact if you did make it everyone would of been in your way and you would need to dab anyway. :) I did a good Nydia showing and casually walked across with a dapper smile on my face. Then we headed on up. Some having more success than others. My worse ride up this track for ages. We regrouped at the fence and realised the wind was pretty gusty up here. Off we set. Some rolling well while others felt they were not doing so well. Got better and better as we went and then regrouped at the bottom. Chatted some more and then set off for loop 2. Much better climbing, MacGyver blew air into his tyre along the way and I rode the creek but dabbed on the otherside. A few cleaned it but once again there were lots of dabs. The climb up was much better this time and once we regrouped at the fence the order was organised and off we went. Much better ride this time for all of us. Caught a couple of slower riders on the way down. 2 loops complete and although we had plenty of time some of us were heading home. Helmut, Tinkerbell, Phatboy and MacGyver headed up for a 3rd loop while the rest of us headed off. Nice liotle loop that we should do more often I think.

Sunday 16th November
Dozer and Helmut picked up Bugs and headed to Dot Com where The
Fox, Tinkerbell and old Texas were waiting. After a short chat we headed up the
tarsel to the start of Captain Thomas. Nice steady climb up here with most of us
getting the hairpins except for the 1st one. Up the rest of Captain Thomas with
us all pushing the odd rocky section. Regroup at the summit road then Helmut
suggested riding up Greenwood before heading out Greenwood. Group decision and
we rode up the road to the start of Greenwood. Regroup here then Bugs led off
with The fox behind followed my Helmut, Dozer then Texas. Fantastic ride down
here expecting Helmut to catch which he didn't. Passed one young lady about half
way down but couldn't quite catch her partner. Texas came to some grief on the
rocks at the top. Ending up going over the bars. Nothing hurt so he soldered on.
1st ride in the hills for a couple of years for him. Regroup at the road then
onwards towards Godley. Texas took the road to meet up at the top while the rest
headed into the rocky single track. Everyone having some issues on the rocks but
no one coming to grief. Passed some nice scenery then meet up with Texas at the
top. Into the downhill getting faster has we headed down. Up again then down
towards PFMTBC rock. Everyone riding it in there own way. Regroup then into the
Anaconda. Helmut leading followed by Tinkerbell, Dozer, Bugs, The Fox and Texas.
Flew down here hitting the high lines on the bends and loving every minute of
it. Across the last rocky bit to Taylor's. Started the climb at a nice pace for
Texas but as we got higher the pass quickened so we had a regroup at the top.
Down the road and off to Dot Com for hot drinks and some viewing. Great ride but
a big one for Texas on his 1st ride for a while.

Sunday 9th November
Finally got my bike back after a service. Put air in the shocks and adjusted rebound, propedal etc etc. The day was a beautiful spring morning with little wind. Got outside early to meet the few who were able to ride. First was Silverfox and Stewie from Nelson (on his new Carbon Scott)followed by Dozer. That was us. Four lads headed out initially towards Rapaki but changed our mind when we saw hundreds (maybe not that many) heading up in a huge group. We headed around up grunted up Huntsbury and a steady pace with only one brief stop. I thought I would be out of condition but I went better than expected. Stewie was nice and rode with us. At the top we went left towards Sumner. I led and we all had a fun ride over Vernon finding the huge group of riders just arriving at the top of Rapaki. Straight into Witch Hill for us and then on around and down Castle Rock track. Flowed really well here and swaited at the top of Bridal Path for a regroup. Stewie was not used to riding so much lava rock and found our trails narrow. Up towards the Gondola with the normal ride, push and carry happening. Used to this after Nydia. Had a little regroup in the shade before moving on, Had a blast coming down from the top into Cavendish Saddle straight up Mt Pleasant. I led with Stewie pushing me along from behind. Then Dozer led down from the top. Had a great run with a food stop at the ruins. Then into Greenwood, having a sweet run. My shock and forks tuned perfectly me thinks. Paste a slow rider just before Gloomy Gulch and let a fast rider through then had a small technical with my chain witch pissed me off. The others caught up. From here blasted down to the road. Fantastic run. Had another regroup before heading down Ct Thomas at speed. So much fun. Got pissed at the stupid gate and nearly went over in a wheel size pot hole before continuing my blast. Only got off at the last rocky section and for the small climb but cleaned the rest. Another regroup at the hairpin to the bottom half and then blasted down. Dot com for food and drink then a steady ride home with the Fox and Stewie blasting the causeway. Great ride.
No doubt just before these guys had finished this ride, Mellonfarmer headed up McCormacks, Britten and Broadleaf then down Mt Pleasant and Greenwood, out and back the first section of Godley, then back up the road and back down Britten and McCormacks.

Sunday 2nd November
Dozer arrived at Bug's place followed by Phatboy, Tinkerbell, The
Fox, Sandals and a new guy called IanJohnChris. After meeting Grand daughter
Bugs we headed off down Alport Place turning right onto Ferry rd. Through the
round about then crossed the road and into the track behind the shops, Nice easy
pace down here until we had a small regroup in the shade near the Ferrymead
bridge. There was a bit of minor adjustments made to a few bikes and some air
pumped into the bottom of Phatboys rear tire. Up St Andrews Hill we headed at a
steady pace with the wind getting stronger as the higher we went. A regroup in
the normal spot then up the last road section before the shared track above.
Another regroup there then up we went to nearly the top where a short discussion
was made whether we were mountain bikers or road bikers. The right decision was
made and we headed around John Britten. Bugs having a few gear issues at the
start but nothing major. Down the tarseal into the valley then up the single
track to the aerials. This stretched the group out a little as the wind was
causing more issues than the rocks. Regroup at the aerials then down we went.
Phatboy leading, then Bugs, Thinkerbell, The Fox, Dozer, Sandals and
IanJohnChris. Fast ride down here as the wind was pushing us along at that
angle. Into Greenwood in a similar order but different. Most enjoyed the down
hill with no one coming to grief. Bugs stopping with vibrations and noise from
his rear suspension. Turned out all was fine just a cable rubbing where it
shouldn't had. No one cleared both rocky bits at the bottom. Some got one, some
got none. Down Captain Thomas we went in a similar order to the different order
from before. The Fox having one of his best rides down here. Phatboy cleared
most things in front of him. Tinkerbell missed one spot and the rest enjoyed the
challenge. All arrived with smiles at the road then down we headed over taking a
couple of roadies on the way to Dot Com. Coffees and Hot Chocolates all round
with No Green teas this trip. Headed back to Ferrymead with a VERY STRONG head
wind. Phatboy continued into the wind down Linwood Ave, Bug's, The Fox, Dozer
and Tinkerbell headed around the river while Sandals and IanJohnChris took the
road back to Bug's place. Home by 12.30 and rode 27km.
Meanwhile, MellonFarmer and his pooch moseyed around in the Worsley Forest, and down the hill a bit in the Farside Trails...

Wednesday 22nd. The drive home
Some people were heading to nelson, some home and some we do not know. The A team were up early and loaded by 8.30 am so we just headed home. Bugs was a man on a mission. We all arrived home, Bugs and I dropping our bikes into the shop, one for repairs and the other for a service. But a notable event happened in the life of Bugs while we were away. He became a Grand Daddy Bugs.
All the best to your Daughter and her partner. Welcome to your Grand Daughter and now you and Mrs Bugs can look forward to babysitting sometimes.

Tuesday 21st The Wakamarina and the Havelock marina.
A real split today. A team up bright and early and after contacting the others it was realised we would be waiting for the others. We headed out and started the track. Nice steady rideable track through some bush. A couple of tricky spots where a push or dab was needed but really quite fun. We climbed up to Devils Creek hut where we had a bit of a break and a look around.
just before we were ready to head off the others started arriving. Chatted with them and also found that Bugs had a major suspension problem. The split in the groups continued. The A team was heading down via the Doom Creek loop while the others were going to slog up the hill to the top. From what we can gather it was steep with more pushing than riding, slippery and rooty all the way down but the bestest track in the world. Bugs headed straight back to the car nursing his bike all the way. The remaining 5 A team members headed down and then into the Doom Creek loop. This was a surprise. Some really cool riding and a creek crossing...
There was a bit of searching for where the track was...
in a couple of spots and then some more awesome single track. One notable incident as The Cook slid off the side of the track and landed in the trees. Lucky for all of us as the drop was horrendous. he survived and we carried on. Finished with a fast blast back to the bottom. Drove back to the lodgings, had a stroll into town for lunch and then headed down to the Havelock Marina for a look around. After this it was pool time and so we went and soaked up the sun, the water and the beer. The others eventually arrived as we exited the pools. More beers and story swapping before dinner at the pub.
No party for the group as we were pretty tired. back for a final drink at the lodgings while the others did their own thing.

Monday 20th we hit the Queen Charlotte.
Up early and into the cars. We drove around to Anakiwa where we unloaded and headed into the Queen Charlotte track for 12.5kms to Te Mahia. The track was a comfortable cruise with some easy ups and groovy wee downs. No race needed but it did not stop some. The veiws along the track were fantastic.
At Te Mahia Saddle we dropped down to the wharf and waited for our trusty boats to arrive for a trip to Portage.
We all stopped in Portage, had linch with Abba and Trevor before saying our goodbyes. We then rode up to Torrea saddle before rejoining the Queen Charlotte Track and heading back to Anakiwa. The track starts with a grunt. Plenty of pushing for some, less for others but a grunt for all. We eventually arrived at a spot for a regroup and a couple of pictures.
From here the track only had a few more grunty ups but lots of fun downs. The run down to Te Mahia Saddle was a break burner of joy. Felt like whooping it all the way. Regrouped and then headed back along the last 12.5kms. Had some fun along here, felt tired in places but everyone had a blast. Arrived back at the cars, some waded in the water while the rest loaded up. The idea was to get back to the lodgings for a swim, spa and drinks. That is what the A team did.
Team 1 went and chilled for a while before arriving after the A team had finished their swims. A few went in for a short while but then we headed into the pub for dinner and drinks. Muscles was the order of the day.
An early night as most were pretty shagged.

Sunday 19th October, the trip along the Nydia continues.
Today we got up slightly later and relaxed and packed our gear. We needed to load all the gear into the boat as tonight we were staying in Havelock. We had plenty of gear to load.
Once sorted we went down to the shearing shed and waited for Trevor and Abba to get sorted before heading back to the drop off at Nydia bay.
The track started as an easy flat section before crossing a stream a couple of times and a steady climb up through a paddock. The real climb started just after this. The climb to Kaiuma Saddle is just as tough and steeper than the climb to Nydia Saddle. No rain today but plenty of sunshine to warm you up. By time we all reached the saddle we were looking stuffed. legs were still tired from the day before. But we got their eventually.

The ride down was not as good as the day before. Shorter sections of rolling before clambering. When it did get good there was a tree to clamber over or under to just slow it all up. Phatboywas getting punctures all the time which caused some big issues and slowed him up. We dropped down to the Upper Kaiuma Valley, crossed the Omahakie stream and climbed a steep but ride able track up through pine forest before a fast blast down the last hill. Wish this section was longer though. At the bottom we rode an undulating gravel road around to shag point to await Abba in his little shuttle.
Macgyver was sent back to look for Phatboy who had real puncture issues. The rest of us shuttled back to Havelock. We loaded the cars and drove to the Motels where we got keys to our sleeping quarters. Small problem of a 10 minute walk between the 2 units. This was not a real issue but did cause a small outbreak of complaint. The team at the motels showered and got a beer going, checked out the pool, did some laundry and relaxed. The other team went down to their cottage and sleepout and sorted themselves out. The 2 groups did their own thing for dinner. The A team popped into the pub for a glorious feed before taking the walk to see team 1 at the cottage for drinks.
A great time was had by all. The moaning was stopped and laughter was the order of the night. In the end the A team strolled back to our rooms, looking at the stars and chatting as we went. bedtime.
Saturday 18th, Day 2 the trip
Up bright and early this morning for the boat ride to Duncan Bay.
Weather was overcast with occasional showers falling. We finally arrived and offloaded the bikes and arranged a pick up time from Nydia Wharf. We all put a little oil to our bikes, organised some jackets and wet weather protection and chatted at the slipway before heading off.
The group headed around the road away from the track and started the climb by road to the Opouri Saddle. This was a steady climb of 10kms to about 590m. Sandals and Helmut chose to push/ride up the downhill track. The group spread out in the usual way, the greyhounds sprinting and the rest of us spread out at our own pace and chatting as we climbed. At the top we regrouped and wondered where Junior might be. Phatboy and a couple stayed behind and waited (it was only 5 minutes and then Junior showed up) while the rest of us got an order and headed down. This was a 4km downhill that involved some wet slippery rocks and roots, but a lot of fun. I treated it with respect and got faster and faster. Silverfox and I rode together. The stay behinds caught us and we also passed Helmut and Sandals as they continued to climb a bit more. Great run but would of been even better in the dry. Regrouped near the bottom and then tokk the link track towards Nydia Bay track. Finally got to the track start.
This section is not long in km's but it is not just a bit of plain track. The first flatter section was great with only a few rooty sections to get over. The group became spread out as we all started the climb. For me it was ride, lift, push, ride as I climbed a challenging track. Wet roots and slippery rocks were the order of the day. I thought I was on my own but in the end it was an illusion of thick bush and lots of bends in the track. We did a bit of a regroup 2/3rds of the way up the climb.
Everyone looked shagged out and had all found the climb challenging in one way or the other. Onwards we went. Still damp but very humid also. I followed Bugs up this last stretch of climb before reaching the Nydia Saddle.
A quick bite and some big breaths were had before the normal order for the downhill got sorted. Once again Silverfox followed me. A real technical downhill with some slick rocks and tree roots to contend. It was on the bike, off the bike, lift and clamber at times. As we got lower we passed Phatboy who had punctured (the first of many for the trip for him). After this I seemed to be on my own and I loved the track. Real challenging, a passenger at times, unclipped and rolling dabs, lift and carry was still the order but flowing quite well. Passed some walkers and continued down. Near the bottom caught up with a few who were down ahead of me and waited for the others to come down. Did not do a full regroup as were spread out quite a bit. The last stretch was a fast blast followed by an flattish ride into Nydia Bay and the wharf. We were all showing signs of fatigue.
We headed back to the farm for showers and some pre dinner drinks...
and the headed across a short tract to Te Rawa Resort for a most enjoyable dinner.
After dinner back to the farm and an early night.
Friday 17th October The annual Trip begins....Marlborough this time.
Up pretty early and headed off to collect Silverfox and Tinkerbell. We then headed off to meet up with the rest of the group at Stalker Park in Woodend at 7.30am.
From here it was follow the lead car to kaikoura for a quick stop for toilet and nibbles. Onwards we headed arriving in Blenheim and stopping for a chat. The rain was starting and our destination of Whites Bay track was not looking positive but we headed in (by a roundabout route) for a look. The sheep of the group followed Mellonfarmer and MacGyver and we rode up the road in the rain then dropping towards Whites Bay for a bit then onto a shingle road. We were all spread out as some paced themselves and some sprinted to the start of the track. Sandals and helmut were dropped off along the way. At the actual start of the track it was pissing down and after a consensus vote, after considering timing issues, after considering safety it was decided to turn back and can the ride. Some headed back the way they came while a few headed down the walk track. Everyone regrouped at the cars in relatively good humour considering.
Mellonfarmer had a bit of an issue with his forks that he had bought 2nd hand and had installed just days before the trip. They were not working for the whole trip giving him 25-50mm of travel only. We headed off to Havelock where we loaded up for our trip to Wilsons Bay Farm. Our lodgings for 2 nights.
It was kind of funny heading off on a MTB trip with our bikes on a boat.
After arriving and sorting out rooms, finding how little electricity we would have a feed was organised. Bugs had supplied a wonderful meal of venison sausages and Steaks. Added to this was bread, lettuce, tomatoes and beetroot. Some sauces applied gave us a great feast. Drinks were had before an early night.

Sunday 12th October
Last big group ride before the trip. Tinkerbell and Dozer showed up at mine and we headed around to the heathcote and along the cut collecting Bugs at the footbridge along the way. We headed around the towpath with me leading. Nearly a collision at a blind corner as someone came towards us. Phatboy was waiting at Ferrymead Bridge. We then headed up St Andrews hill. Bugs ended up leaving the rest of us behind and I was tail end charley. Still not on the pace but improving after my health issues. Finally ground up to the singletrack above Upper Major Hornbrook. Here we caught up with Sandals and Helmut. Mellonfarmer was here chatting as he was on the way down from an early ride. I followed Sandals up here as the others chatted. We expected them to pass us but obviously we had enough of a head start not to panic. Came up to the point where we make our own hairpin onto old John Brittain. Sandals went straight ahead and I cleaned the hairpin and the rocks above it stopping around the corner for a regroup. Sandals and Helmut went into the olg Greenwood entrance and waited at the ruins. The rest of us headed around John Brittain (the track has had no work on it obviously since before the earthquakes) then down to the saddle and started the grind up Mt Pleasant. Once again i kept up the rear. Got to the top and headed straight down. Everyone seemed to enjoy a quick blast down here and I had the best run I have had for a while. Regrouped at the ruins. Got started before another big group caught up but in the end they got in amongst us. I had to stop for a call about gloomy gully and everyone continued. I had an excellant run down here but buggered up the double rock section. Still only 11am so we headed up Godley. An ok run around here but still pretty spread out. I must admit my downhills were a lot better than my ups. Everyone seemed to be happy with the experience. Down the Anaconda at speed enjoying it all except the last 2 hairpins. Down the tail then a steady grind up Taylors. Down to Sumner and a stop at Dot Com before the pedal back. Home just after 1 feeling quite good. I should be fine for the trip and the others all seem to be on form. let the weather put on a good week.

Tuesday 7th October
3 different rides. I went out in the afternoon for a grind up Rapaki up over Vernon and then down Huntsbury trying to avoid sheep. I took the singletrack above the track until I came upon a huge flock of sheep and lambs so got back onto the main trail and continued on down at a good clip.
Those others that wanted to ride before the trip met at Rubberjaws place at 6.15pm. There was The Cook, Phatboy, Bug's, The Fox, Tinkerbell and Dozer. We all set off at a nice pace towards Rapaki. Up we headed with Phatboy, Tinkerbell and Bugs leading till the gate where we had a regroup and a couple removed some layers. Up we headed in 3 groups, Phatboy found a fast gear and disappeared ahead of us all, Most were in the middle group and The Cook followed up the rear. Lots of interesting thing's on the hill including an overweight roady in lycra who chatted to us at the top for a while. Interesting character. Wind was getting bit cold so up Mt Vernon we headed to warm back up. Nice tight group most of the way. At the start of the Traverse The Cook decided to back track and head down the farm track. The rest headed around the start of The Traverse then dropped down the rocky corner and then 4WD track heading towards Bowenvale old school. At the gate Bugs lead off on his own track though the tussock heading down and everyone else followed on there own lines. Phatboy found a hidden rock in the grass and had a small woopsy. Everyone else got down to the single track using there own lines. Into the fast single track mixing ourselves up with another group who had came up The Hidden Valley. Regroup at the fence when Phatboy lead with the rest in hot pursuit. 3/4 of the way down and Phatboy broke a spoke which caused his tubeless tyre to loose all it's air. While he repaired it with a tube from The Fox, Bug's and Tinkerbell removed a rock or two on a tricky corner. Down we all headed as we were loosing the light fast. All in one piece at the bottom. Across town we headed into the head wind at a solid pace to Rubberjaws place where we meet the rest of the PFMTBinc family for trip discussions.

Monday 6th October solo events
I knocked off work at 3.30 and as the weather was clear decided to do a small solo ride. Feeling a distinct lack of energy but the ride was needed. Got home changed and fluffed about then headed out around the river and started the grind up Huntsbury. Oh it was tough. A few spots in the open had a head wind but luckily there were only a few spots. Off the tarmac and started the shingle. Between the first 2 gates I got attacked by a feckin Magpie and then between the 2nd gate and the pylon another feckin magpie got me. Did not need this. A bit more wind up here and lots of sheep and lambs everywhere. Lots of shite also. Finally topped out and headed onto the Mt Vernon Track and then onto the Fram Track for a grassy downhill. A bit greasy but still quite fast. Into the steep rutty section where the 3rd Magpie of the day attacked me. What the feck. Finally home feeling tired and a tad sick actually. The Cook popped past dropping off my work keys and he did the same ride as I did. He got attacked by 2 Magpies in the same spots, one going up, one coming down. A spot of seat post problems saw him stop briefly by the pylons and the wind at the top nearly blew him off the bike. The rain started as he got to the tarmac at the bottom of the farmtrack.

Sunday 5th October
Tinkerbell and Silverfox arrived at mine bang on 8.30 and the 3 of us set off for a flat fitness ride. Headed down Radley into Bromley Cemetry and around the back of Bromley park cutting onto Pages for a look at Dozers rebuild, then cut through Vancouver Cres and out onto Ottawa Rd before taking the bouncy stop bank around Avonside Drive to Burwood Bridge. Left here until we hit travis and then right down past Burwood hospital and finally into Bottlelakes main entrance. Still only 9.10am. We delayered some clothing and then I led off going right into the tracks. Long time since any of us were out here on these tracks. We kept up a good pace enjoying the track. Getting used to the difference between riding the hill and riding this upsy downsy twisty flat. Finally the steep little climb to the top of the hill and straight down passing a few people resting. Fast pump and caught upto a family of riders with a tag along but they peeled left while we went right on the old track. Came out onto a weird landscape of deforested hell. Track seemed very different but still riding steadily. We then headed all the way down the beach track until we got to Spencer Park t intersection. Rather than do the short stretch into the park for a rest we continued down the tracks we knew from old. Feeling the effects of the steady pace we finally managed to complete a full circuit. We had a quick rest before heading up the middle track eventually back onto the beach track where we continued to give it a nudge. We followed one track that took us back towards the climb up the hill to the shelter. Here we stopped for 15-20 minutes while we had a bite to eat. Back into the down hill and through the forest back to the carpark at the entrance. Stopped for a pee and then returned home pretty much the way we went. Silverfox got to the front and started cranking up the pace so we stayed with him. It was a struggle and if I had of got a bit closer I may have been tempted to push him off. A great ride and we were home by 11.45. Rough estimate 60-70km of riding. Stuffed afterwards.
The Cook went out later after he finished work and did a flat ride out to Bottlelake and around checking out some sites while Phatboy went out with Junior and did some laps up at Worsley I believe, and the Mellonpharmacologist took his boy and his dog out for a quick spin at BottleLake in the early afternoon... He'd also been playing in Worsley's the day before as well

Saturday 4th October Bugs Solo
Bugs was on the coast so decided on a solo trip up The Croesus.
Woke to rain but headed off anyway. Was snowing in the carpark at the bottom so
had a coffee then decided to head up as far as I could. The 1st 3/4 of the track
was generally ok to ride with snow on the swing bridges and most of the track.
There was a couple of trees over the track and one big slip. After that in came
a huge hail storm which caused me to shelter under some big trees. (Now I know
why we wear helmets). From about 3/4 way up the snow got deeper so I had to push
the Giant up. This became harder as it got deeper but I was about a kilometer
from the top so carried on. Finally after about 2 hours I reached the Hut. Snow
was about a foot deep now. There were 4 trampers in the hut who were getting
ready to head down. After a chat with them they left and left me a roaring fire.
Lunch and a warm up then into the decent. Caution was the approach at 1st as it
was hard to spot rocks and when I got some speed up I would hit some deep snow
and slide a little out of control. The further down I went, the faster it got.
Unable to feel the fingers at this point but enjoying it all. Flew past the 4
trampers then 3 hunters with rifles and a crossbow. Onwards I went and came
around a corner surprising 2 goats on the track. Continued on and surprised
another 2 goats further along the track. Into the climb up to the road scaring
another goat on the way. Arrived back at the car just as the sun was parting the
clouds feeling pumped. 22km and about 4 hours of one of the best tracks in New
Zealand.

Tuesday the Last of September
Cancellations from Phatboy and RubberLips, so Buggz, Dozer, Mellonpharmacist, Silverfox, the Cook and Tinks met at Upper Major Hornbrook. Up Britten, and around the tussock-hidden-rocky singletrack, down the road, up Mt Pleasant singletrack, all climbing well. Big
regroup at the top, then into the descent. Fun fun fun. First rocky
sections were good, gliding over them, then into the
tussocks, swooping from bend to bend, total groove and flow, one or two missed corners... Regroup again above the ruins, and then headed on down. Bony upper half and a few scratchy corners, but no one lost too much traction. Flowing and pumping around to the 'gulch through the humpy bits and paused and hung for another regroup.
Back into the descent, heaps of speed on the rocky start then
flying through all the swoopy corners, some catching air on the humps and one screaming at the sheep to get out of the way. Scratchy drifts around
into Dave's section, hooning down this and around the bends. Through the bit
that's been so grovelly over winter, pumping, around into
the wee valley. Mellonframer paused here til the others appeared around
the hillside, then got going again, flying, into the first rocky up, both him and Buggs mis-gearing this - foot on a rock, push, and rolled onwards.
Into the next up and swoopy swoopy down to the end.
Then a cruise up the road, slowly leaving the Cook behind, but at the big pines
everyone dropped into their granny gears and rolled nice and slow til he caught up,
then it was onwards up round the bends and into Britten, still enough
light to see by. Total blast on this descent, flying
down the trail. Over the fence, good-byes said all before 8pm.
Monday 29th September
I knocked off at 3.30 and as the girls are on holiday and I did not need to cook I decided to get a small ride in to try and work on my fitness. I left home at 4 and I headed up Rapaki at a steady pace, the wind was in my face on the way up but at the flat section it was a gusty side wind, no great use to me but had a a cooling effect. At the top I headed straight up Vernon. Now the wind was behind me and was quite good. Not exactly blowing me up the track but eased the burden by a percent or 2. Got to the top of Hunstbury and the wind was blustering and bloody cold. I had always intended to come down here so I layered up a top and put my pfmtbc scarfie bandana thing on to keep me warm before setting off. What a wild ride. The wind was blowing me all over the palce even on the farm track. Had to peddle to go down the hill, my helmet was being pulled off my head nearly as the wind blew into it. Choking me. By the pylons I was wondering if I would survive to write the blog. Finally down to the tarmac where I thought it may be better. No it actually got worse in a few spots and I had some scary moments. I was pleased to be home. An hours ride but a days thrills. Home by 5.10. Meanwhile the Cook knocked off at 5 went home and grabbed his bike. He was doing my ride in reverse. He struggled up Huntsbury with side winds blowing him everywhere then across vernon. First bit was good as he was sheltered from the wind but as he turned for the downward stretch it was totally different. Into the gail on a downward singletrack. Frightening. He then came down Rapaki which was a bit better but lots of walkers spread all over the track.

Saturday 27th September
An early start as we headed out to Halswell Quarry for the last planting of the year. I went outside and was surprised to see Silverfox waiting. He was soon followed by Bugs. We headed around to the bottom of Rapaki rd where we were met by Dozer. We started the climb up. I knew it was gonna be a struggle for me after weeks of bugs. We climbed steadily all the way. Silvefox had some gear trouble and while a regroup happened at the gate I pushed on slowly. We were all together as we started the last climb. Now I had gear failure as my seat dropper played up. The others ambled on while I got out the 100mph tape. Worked a treat and I then pushed on after the others. A regroup and then up over the Vernon Track. I lost ground over here. Around the traverse which was a good blast then dropped into Thompsons and headed for the Sign of the Kiwi. Up the road and because we had been slower (Thanbks to me) we skipped Marleys and went straight onto Kennedys. Everyman for himself as we headed down here. Bouncing all the way. Over the fence 2 went left up the track while the other two went up the fatm track. Then down the single track which offered some surprises with some chunky ruts. Straight into the crocidile finally I started to close the gap on the others. Regrouped and continued down eventually showing up at the planting right on time. Phatboy showed up later after having gone up Dyers Pass and down Kennedys. Tinkerbell arrived by car just in time to miss the planting. Job done time for the road ride back along cashmere rd at a good clip. Silverfox peeling off at Hoonhay Rd while we went on to cups of tea at the roadies stop. Dozer peeled off at Barrington while Bugs and I finished the ride home. Good to survive the ride.

Thursday 25th September
Dozer picked Bugs up and they drove to Upper Hornbrook Rd arriving
at 6.15pm. Up though the shared track in the paddocks with a sharp right before
the Summit road. Dozer cleared the corner and Bug's didn't. Across John Britten
which needs a grass trim as the grass hides all the rocks. Both rode this
without any dabs. Dropped down the road then up the single track to the aerials
at the top. Turned the lights on here for the down hill. Bugs lead with Dozer
hot on his heals until Dozer's wheel slipped on a fresh sheep s---. Bugs got a
little lead on from here. Into Greenwood in the same order. Flew down here as
the track was dry n firm. Dozer stayed hot on Bugs tail all the way. No daps
until the 1st rocky bit at the bottom. Back up the road pushing a nice pace as
this was a fitness ride. Into the shared track down to the car by 7.45pm. Great
ride.

Tuesday 23rd September
Bugs rode to Rubberjaws place who wasn't riding and meet up with
The Cook. Shortly afterwards Silverfox
and Tinkerbell arrived in the van followed by Dozer on his bicycle. After a
short discussion on where to ride we headed over to Rapaki where we started at a
slow pace until the gate where a couple took off some jackets. Continued up at a
faster pace enjoying the views we had most of the way. Had a rolling regroup
before the last steeper bit. Arrived at the top still with no lights on. Wind
was picking up and getting colder so after the last person arrived we turned on
lights and headed up over Mt Vernon. Into the Traverse until the 1st rocky bit
then sharp right and down towards the top of Huntsbury. Down the rutted 4wd
track to the top of Old School Bowenvale. Dozer lead down Bowenvale followed by
Bugs, Tinkerbell, The Fox then The Cook. Most had a great ride down except for
The Cook who had a small crash when one wheel slid out. All was fine though.
Regroup at the bottom then down the gravel road to the bottom. Quick stop at The
Brick Works for pint and a few hot chips. Dozer headed his way while the others
when back to Ruberjaws. Bugs and The Cook continued on to there places while The
fox and Tinkerbell drove home from there.

Saturday 20th September
Everyone was either working, away or busy with something so I set off for a ride by myself. The plan was to start early but I got a later start than I wanted. The ride became a non stop sprint. I headed out and down Radley St to Linwood Ave. Through Bromley Cemetry and out onto Pages Rd eventually, past Dozers rebuild. Down around Vancouver cress onto Ottawa Rd then Avonside Dr along the rugged stopbank to the Burwood Bridge. Down to Travis Rd. left then right following Burwood Rd then into finally into Bottle Lake Park. I have not been out there for a few years and as I rode I discovered a few changes. My plan was to go through the center and do a half loop but the center has changed a bit. Anyhow I pushed as hard as I could ending up pretty much at Spencerville. Not all the way but nearly. I found myself then coming back along the beach which we never used to ride very often and finally back onto the old beach track that we did ride often. Along here to the park at the end of beach Rd and then sprinted down to the planting at Travis. Lungs and legs burning. Planted for 2 hours, bbq then homeward bound. Travis Rd then left to the Burwood Bridge then roght along the stop bank into a head wind basically reversing my outward trip. Pumped hard all the way and felt reasonably stuffed by time I got home. Showered and then out for the afternoon.

Tuesday 16th September
The Cook went out solo. Not sure what happened to anyone else but he rode up Rapaki over Mt Vernon and then did the Traverse Track. The weather closed in and it got pretty windy so he headed back along the Traverse and then down the rocky sidle path onto Huntsbury. Had a moment on a rock on his way down. Continued down the single track above the farm track section of Huntsbury before getting back on the road. Got home just before the rain hit.

Tuesday 9th September
Bugs arrived early at the bottom of Huntsbury so headed over to
Dozers. Then we headed to the bottom of Huntsbury where The Cook and The Fox
were waiting. Up we rode in a nice close group. All the way to the end of the
tarseal with out lights. Up the farm track to the 1st gate where we had a short
break while the Fox adjusted his new dropper seat post. (About time). Up we
headed to the start of the Traverse. Short wait there while we regrouped.
Another group of 4 guys arrived. Let them go 1st then gave the chase. Bugs lead
with Dozer behind followed by The Fox then The Cook. Tail wind and catching the
other 4 guys so there was no stopping until the top of Vic park. A quick chat
with the other guys while the others caught up. Down though the Rock Garden to
the skidder site. All close together. Down we headed with Dozer leading and Bugs
close behind. All the way to the bottom. The Fox and The Cook not to far behind.
Up the Hidden Valley to old School. Track had just had the grass cut so make us
all have trouble on the 1st few corners but cleared the top ones. Down Old
School in the same order as before. Track had a few new bridges and a couple of
unexpected challenges as Dozer found out when he went over the bars. Bit of dirt
on the elbow and maybe a sprained wrist (Like Ruberjaws). Everyone else down in
one piece. Down the road and home from there. 17km.

Saturday 6th September
A beautiful day for a ride. The Cook and I left my place and headed around the normal tracks to ferrymead bridge where we hooked up with Dozer. Phatboy was running late so he was aiming to catch us up. The three of us headed out to Sumner, riding past Dot Com just to check to see if anyone had shown up there. Nope. We then headed down the esplanade and started the grind over to Taylors. After the first hairpin we saw Phatboy on the esplanade and figured if we kept up a staedy pace he would catch us by the top. We were right. Down into Taylors and then up the Anaconda. Surprised us how well we climbed this. Those hairpins make you suck it in. From the top we headed via singletrack to Evans Pass. Great ride over here and fun going in the opposite direction to what we normally ride. Regrouped at Evans then up the road and into greenwood. Fantastic blast down here. Everyone happy at the bottom. Caught some slow riders coming down but they stopped to let us pass. Down Ct Thomas really flowing well. Phatboy cruised home while the other 3 stopped at Dot com for a bite and a drink before blasting homeward. Dozer stopping at ferrymead. Roughly from home to home for me was 50km give or take a km or 2. great ride.

Tuesday 2nd September
I collected The Cook and headed up Sty Andrews to meet the lads at Upper Major Hornbrook. It was bloody windy and bone chilling. There was Nelly, Bugs, Phatboy, Tinkerbell, Silverfozx and finally Dozer arrived. We headed up the single track at a steady pace turning on the lights as we rode. (although I had to stop and plug mine in) We turned left into Upper John Brittan and stopped at the gates. We were into the cloud now and decided to head up Broadleaf Lane to the trig station. Not mucking around in the breeze we all headed down towards the top of Greenwood hoping to get out of the cloud. Regrouped here and then waited for the Cook. He was having problems seeing with his glasses on and could not see without them. He also had a fall and lost the track breifly. He arrived and we headed down. We were below the cloud and we all had goodish runs down here. Track was in perfect condition. We then climbed back up the road and then down Lower John Brittan to the cars. 1.5 hours on the track including stops.

Sunday 31st August
Time for a big flat spin to the planting at Otakaikino. Bugs, Tinkerbell and Silverfox met at mine and we headed off about 9.05. Down Opawa to Waltham then over the bridge and through CPIT onto High St. Down here to the Square then Worcester and then Hagley Park. Kilmarnock and right onto the bike trail along the rail line. A good steady blast down here to Tuckers Rd. We were here by 9.40 so we stopped for a cup of tea before spinning through the Styx Mill Reserve onto Gardiners before cutting through the crematorium and onto Greywacke Rd. A ride along the trail to the planting site where we planted shitloads. We returned in the oppisite direction with Tinkerbell and Silverfox turning off at Kilmarnock St. Bugs and I then pushed into the easterly all the way home.

Wednesday 27th August
Bugs road over and meet Dozer at the bottom of Rapaki at 6.18 as
planned. Nice steady ride up here with no stops. Plenty of walkers on the track
and a few riders coming down. Great at the top as there was no wind and the sky
was clear. Waiting for a few riders coming down Mt Vernon. Dozer lead up with
Bugs close behind then another guy followed us over Mt Vernon. His light crapped
out half way so followed us using our lights to find his way. He headed off on
his own and we headed around the Traverse. Bugs leading with Dozer not to far
behind. Down into Vic Park where we stopped for a quick rest before the rock
garden. The wind was picking up and the temperature was dropping. Dozer lead
down though the Rock garden then down the normal way to the skidder site. Down
from here though the trees then down we went. Track was better than last time as
it had dried out and some one had done a bit of work since the last time. Down
the gravel road at the bottom then up to Dozers for a coffee to warm up. Bugs
headed back across town towards home. Home around 9.15pm and rode 23km.
